Barefoot, but strong

“Before the war, fishermen, their wives, and children often went barefoot. Even on special occasions like attending church, they would carry their espadrilles in hand to prevent damage, only putting them on at the temple door. On rainy days, housewives and fisherwomen wore clogs or galoshes, while indoors, they preferred sandals.”
