Chocolate and Oblivion: The Silence of Women
Juncal Elgorriaga, sister of the founder of the Elgorriaga factory, ran the Juncal confectionery in Irun, San Sebastián, and Madrid.
Another Juncal, surnamed Cuevas, was head of the Elgorriaga factory’s confectionery. Today, many chocolate businesses are run by women, such as Miriam and Lorena Gómez, who continued the Juncal Elgorriaga business in San Sebastián. Despite their significant contribution, they have often been erased from the official history of chocolate in the region. Recent initiatives, such as those of the Gaurko Andreak association, seek to offer visibility to the work and knowledge of women in the chocolate industry in Gipuzkoa.
