Cotton and Memory: Women of Andoain
The “Women of Cotton” project seeks to honor and highlight the work of these women in the textile industry of Gipuzkoa, as it has left a significant legacy in the collective memory of Andoain and the region.
The Cotton Mill of Andoain was not only crucial for the industrialization of Gipuzkoa but also played a fundamental role in the incorporation of women into industrial work, marking a milestone in the labor and social history of the region. The Balenciaga Museum in Getaria has made efforts to recognize and pay tribute to these women who, stitch by stitch, made the legend of Balenciaga possible. The museum has collected testimonies from the team of seamstresses over the years, seeking to show the human side of the designer and provoke a certain nostalgia for that era of haute couture. The work of these women has inspired artistic works, such as the paintings by Rosa Solano, which reflect abstract compositions based on Balenciaga patterns.
